Demeter scents inspired by memories

Did you know that smell is the most sensitive of the senses? We can remember smells with 65% accuracy after a year, while visual recall is about 50% after three months. It’s no wonder that smells can evoke so many memories within us. One of the most evocative smells from my childhood is crayons. Research has also shown that smell is the sense most linked to our emotional recollection. As a part of CBB, I was given the chance to experience the power of scent memory with Demeter Fragrances.

Demeter Fragrance Library makes over 300 fragrances inspired by the scents of everyday objects and life experiences that evoke personal and powerful memories related to those scents. The science of Scent and Memory explains why Demeter Fragrances evoke such powerful emotion. Everyone has different memeories. Your experiences and memories of Chocolate, Jasmine, Grass, Mountain Air, or Vanilla Cake Batter, may be very different from someone else’, which is what makes the DNA of Demeter so unique.

A selection of Demeter Fragrances inspired by Scent Memories from Demeter CEO Mark Crames include:

Rice Paddy: During a trip to a Taiwanese factory, Demeter CEO Mark Crames, found himself surrounded by Rice Paddies. This experience inspired this scent; reflecting the calm, Zen-like nature of the rice paddy itself.

Mountain Air: A personal attempt by Demeter’s CEO to capture a recent trip to Alaska, which was one of the most amazing vacations of his life, this scent reflects the crisp, clean, cool mountain air, the endless evergreen and the crystal clear waters of Alaska.

Vanilla Cake Batter: Another Demeter CEO inspired scent, this one reminded him of early childhood and of licking the spoon and bowl when Grandma baked. Is there any better memory? This scent is a simply irresistible blend of all the basics: creamy vanilla, sugar and butter.

My experience: My personal favourite out of these 3 scents from Demeter CEO’s personal scent memories is the Vanilla Cake Batter. I really like sweet scents and anything that reminds me of baked goods. When I first smelled it, it quickly brought back memories of my baking, especially during Christmas. Mountain Air reminds me of bike rides during the summer, which I think it’s really refreshing. I like to use this scent around the house and to mix it with the Vanilla Cake Batter. Finally, my least favourite is the Rice Paddy. I’m not too much of an outdoor person and thus, this smell reminds me of grass. I’m not a huge fan of that scent.

These are the scent memory blending set that is curated and customized exclusively for me. I chose the scent of Cotton Candy and the two scents specially chosen by Demeter to blend with my scent memory”

Cotton Candy: Cotton candy is made from sugar that is heated and spun into slim threads that look like a mass of cotton and was invented in 1897 by John Wharton, a candy maker from Nashville, Tennessee. They invented a device that heated sugar in a spinning bowl that had tiny holes in it and formed a treat originally called “Fairy Floss.”

Sunshine: What does Demeter’s Sunshine smell like? Think of your favorite, most comfortable cotton T-Shirt left outside and warmed by the sun. We thought long and hard about what elements we could use to express the idea of Sunshine. After a debate that lasted more than a year, we decided cotton, warmed by the sun, was the smell that best represented the idea of Sunshine.

Pixie Dusy: The truth is, at Demeter we do not know what Pixie Dust smells like – but we know what it SHOULD smell like: fruity, sugary and light as the air itself. And that describes our Pixie Dust perfectly.

My experience: These 3 scents are my favourites! Everything about them is sweet and blends so perfectly together. Cotton Candy has always been one of my favourite sweets and I’m really happy that the Dementer Fragrance of it is not too strong and not overly sweet. Pixie Dust smells like Summer because it has a strong scent of watermelon. It reminds me of Jolly Rancher candies. Sunshine has a very clean smelling, with such a nice grounding of vanilla. I don’t think it smells like a t-shirt in the sun but instead, I think the perfect word to describe this scent is happiness. I love mixing Sunshine with Cotton Candy to reminds me of a Summer Carnival.
